The absolute point zero: Detective Comics #27 (May 1939) introduces the "Bat-Man" to the world; the origin arrives just a few pages later — the parents gunned down in the alley, the vow, the bat at the window — and in rapid succession come the debuts of Robin (Detective #38) and, in Batman #1, the Joker and Catwoman together in the same issue. This is a darker, more ruthless Batman than the one to come, who in the very first stories doesn't even hesitate to use a gun.
